Acrylic on canvas – Johnny Cash was an outstanding musician and “At Folsom Prison”, is one of my all time favourite albums. This is a painting of a photograph by Leigh Wiener, titled – Johnny Cash, a man in action. Taken in the photographer’s Los Angles studio in 1960. One of many taking in a series of four sessions between 1960-1963. He had recently signed with Columbia Records. He had also recently moved his family—wife Vivian and their daughters—to California. But unfortunately this was around the time when he began to spiral, increasing his usage of amphetamines to cope. And when June Carter joined his tour in January 1962, it was the beginning of the end of his already troubled marriage to Vivian. He and June Carter married six years after starting on the road together. I kept the black and white from the original photo and wanting to emphasise that he is the man in black I added colour, a lot of it, to the background. I also added some lyrics from his songs to the background including, Folsom Prison blues, Walk the line, 25 minutes to go, Hurt and Ring of fire.
